As a practical matter, check out the laptop cases made by Pelican (
www.pelican.com). There's probably one that will a) fit your computer, and b) fit in your bag. If you have your laptop in one of these when you crash, there's a much better chance that it'll come out un(or less)scathed.
I have seen those before, but the thing is, I just can't get into it. I bought the computer I have so I can throw it in my bag and take it with me anywhere, without it ever being a hassle. That functionality would be ruined if it had a huge chunk of metal encasing it.
