If the serial number starts with an "S", it's probably an American-made (Greenville, Mississippi) Schwinn. A while back, there was a discussion on this, and although it wasn't 100% definite, it seemed likely this is the case. "S," then another letter (probably representing the month of frame manufacture), then the "5" for 1985.........If it doesn't start with an "S", probably Japanese-made (Panasonic). edit: I'm talking about '80's Schwinns regarding the serial numbers starting with "S."
