would it be wrong of me...?
so some girl named "Megan" (i don't know her personally, but i did talk to her on the phone today, as will come in later) is having a fixed gear built by an LBS in about the worst way possible. she brings in an old schwinn varsity frame she probably got for $5. the cranks are one piece and on top of that the freewheel is in the BB, not the rear hub (whaaaaa?) regardless of this, the main wrenchmonkey at the LBS says he will set her up. i'm not sure exactly what he told her, but he sold her on ordering a $85 soma hub to re-lace to her old back rim (piece of crap). along with this the back rim is 36 hole and the hub is 32... so she'll probably have to pay for a new rim, plus the spokes, plus the labor to put it all together, and even then she can't ride fixed because of the bottom bracket.
i find this out all today as i stop by regularly and the guy who set her up with all of this is gone for a month, another mechanic (newer guy) is trying to make heads and tails of what is supposed to go on here. when he notices the BB he decides he needs to call her, i offer to give up another crap schwinn frame with a regular (but still one piece) BB if she wants it... so i talk to her on the phone for a few minutes to see if she wants it, and she says sure.
but she's still, in the end, getting some sort of overpriced (IMO) wheel on a crappy bike, if the chainline even works, which isn't adjustable with a one-piece crank.
anyway, i feel like she's going to get screwed out of $$$ and end up with something she's not happy with... should i tell her that i think there are better ways to go fixed when she comes to pick up my frame, or should i just let the LBS do it's business? i think she'd be a lot happier with a 3-piece crank frame and a cheaper/pre-built wheel.
