Feet swelling, compressing the sensory nerves, and reducing blood flow as well as perhaps another faCTOR. dId the numbness spread from the pedal contact point of the foot? Are you using clipless or platforms w/ clips and straps?
I had numbness problems with clip and strap because I was using too flexible a shoe to ride in. It caused me to initially experience severe pain then numbness starting at the contact point of the pedals and spreading outward from there.
Try a warm soak, to help relieve the foot. Check the fit of your shoes, if you don't allow for foot enlargement, then you can do nerve damage. Your feet WILL swell on a long ride and the hotter it gets, the more they swell.
