I went through five cheap stems in the past year looking for the magic angle and length that would work for me.

Once I found the correct geometry for me I spent some bucks on a quality (light and strong) stem.

The correct geometry for me involved a set-back seat post (35mm set-back) and a rather short six degree stem (90mm) flipped up rather than down.
