Did they cut the lock? Was it locked at all? It's painful to have a bike stolen, but I have to scold you at least a little if you repeatedly left a bike like that unlocked in an apartment stairwell in SF and didn't expect it to disappear eventually. If it was locked with a cheap lock or in a manner that was easy to defeat, the same applies.
That said, I feel your pain. I hope you get it back.
