a box full of american candy arrived on my doorstep sometime this morning and my kid, in full not-a-morning-person mode, moved it inside (with one foot, probably) and went off to school without telling me. fell over it when i got into executive mode and was on my way to my bike.

so. late start this morning, because of course it had to be opened while on the phone to the sender and all. for some reason this made me a full 10% faster than my usual time when i did head out. it was a really, really nice ride - i'm not sure what's making so many of the rides so pleasant these days.

it's been pretty weird, neat weather all week. warm, really grey and really really humid. like living inside fog that just happens to be invisible. it's been winter, basically, but 15 or 20C warmer. going home was neat because to look at it from inside you sure thought you were going to get cold and rained on, and arrive home soaking wet. but it never rained on me at all. stopped at the grocery store for one of those we'll-eat-real-food-tonight things, and like usual bought too much to go in the bag.

i had it all outside on the sidewalk, and was methodically unpacking everything (map book, half-knitted sock, baseball schedule, balled-up morning-commute shirt wrapped around balled-up morning-commute socks, four defunct blinkies, loose batteries, loose 5's and 10's, hairbrush, pens) and then packing it back in again, trying to find places for the two super-giant-jumbo boxes of cereal and fit everything in around them, when i looked up and saw myself being Looked At by . . . one of the other baseball moms. i guess she'd brought her teenaged daughter along to help her load the 24s of pepsi and coke into the suv. she was giving me a Very Odd Look. i'm not sure she was too thrilled to have been caught seeing me, but i can't figure out if she was embarrassed herself or just thought i should be. sigh; i know plenty of those people who never think twice about living in cars, but when it gets right down to it i don't seem to understand them at all. she offered in this disoriented, feeble-guess sort of way to drive my corn pops home for me , but then when i said 'oh no thanks,' she didn't go away either. she seemed to have been caused puzzlement in some deep-seated, critical-hit sort of way that confused me too. i can't figure out what all that was about, but i guess i might find out at tomorrow's game.

kind of hope so; she confused me so much with her confusion i'm not going to sleep until the mystery's solved. i'd be curious as heck if i wasn't so uninterested.

game close to home tomorrow it's another bike day.
