well I have never done the mx thing but I imagine the biggest difference would be lack of control. You can throttle or brake to control your level on an mx bike. You don't really have that on a mtbike. You can use your brakes to throw your nose down but there is nothing to pull it back up if there is a mistake.

Also just plain weight, freeride bikes are pretty light compared to mx.
