Mountain SPD shoes actually work extremely well in clips and straps. The stiff sole, secure fit, and lack of laces to get caught in the chain make Clip/Strap riding feel almost as secure and comfortable as clipless. I sometimes wear my SPD shoes while riding clipless, but more often I would just swap the pedals

My point being: if you want the best shoes for cycling, wear cycling shoes regardless of what pedals you are using. There are enough different styles of cycling shoes out there that you should be able to find something you like.
