I've done stupid stuff like bike back from west oakland drunk by myself at 3 am (especially that one time in a halloween costume when i was like HEY look at me!)

but then again all sorts of chit happens ALL the time, muggings, surprise 2x4 to your head for your bike, stick ups, beat downs etc

I HONESTLY believe i was able to get by with very little incident the whole time i lived in oakland because i was on a bike at ALL times when i wasn't indoors or wherever else i was going. Still there's chit that happens when you're biking, but i think i was lucky because i sticked to all the large main streets. I just felt safer there. anyhow, ya, there's my .02

i think the trick is to move quickly (although that doesn't do ***** for you if your antagonizer's in a car) and biking, biking, biking. i go places i never would on foot at night on a bike because i know i can get the **** out of there quickly.

although the moving quickly didn't much help a friend of mine, who was knocked off her bike and mugged.

jeez.
