Dr. Pete, keep in mind, I'm one of the pro-bike helmet people...

A helmet -- because it is not a smooth curve like your naked neck/head -- is more likely to catch in a sliding accident. So, you are more likely to suffer paralysis from a broken neck in those types of accidents than you would were you not wearing a helmet. (The cracking your head open and upsetting the flow of signal to your spinal cord not being factored in...)
