How does one deal with the conundrum of wanting to illuminate the pretentiousness of another without falling victim to hypocrisy?

By this I mean, what is painting if not the creation, and worship, of material?

What if I believe I have been dancing above it all and wake up to realize I have just been stomping in the mud, splattering and being splattered?

How can I scold someone for not withholding judgment? Point a finger for pointing fingers.

How do I make people believe that I am humble without having to tell them?
If I hold my tongue, they will think me uncouth. (Abrasiveness passes for manners among this set.)

How can I make my desperation for approval appear as effortless coolness?

Is cognitive dissonance scarcer among track kids than the religious right?
Does it exist more heavily on one or both coasts, or is it mostly cultivated in fly-over-country?
