My wife and I started regularly riding American Lung Association asthma rides in September of 2004. They have two fundraiser rides a year. We rode in September then in June of 05, volunteered in Sept. 05, rode June this year, and will volunteer again in September. The kids joined us on for our second ride, so the entry fees and fundraising became more difficult, so we limit that to one a year and we run a rest stop for the other. They have a "VIP" program where after 5 events they cover the entry fee costs for you, which will help when we get to that point.
We've enjoyed the support part of the rides as much as the ride itself. I think. We get to meet all of the riders, or at least those riding the particular route we're on, and we get to see a little bit of the other side of things.
