Bag balm is amazing stuff and I even have grown to sort of like the smell. I used to use it pre-ride and apply directly to my nether-regions but a huge problem is that if you accidentially get it on fabric it stains pretty badly and cleaners do not get it out well. For that reason I have purchased a bottle of nashbar chamois cream and it works fine. Then again I have only ever had mild saddle sore problem and never when using protection.
