Stay away from NYCBikes!

The owner is an ******* who freely admits that he doesn't give a **** about pissing off a customer and causing them to never return. Even after learning that I bought a wheelset at his shop because I deliberately wanted to support the bike shop closest to my apartment, he still treated me like **** and showed nothing but contempt for me and the fact that I had a problem with his unbelievably hostile attitude.

The backstory:
I bought a $200 fixed-gear wheelset from this place about a month ago. Cool. Within the first week I noticed a wobble in my bike's handling which steadily got worse. I thought it might be the headset because I had been in an accident the week before. So I went to a bike shop on the upper east side (Pedal Pusher) when I had an opportunity to break away from work that day. If I had known that it was the rear wheel's spokes that had gotten dangerously loose, I would have gone straight back to the place I bought the wheels but I didn't find that out until after the mechanic at Pedal Pusher showed me the loose spokes. So I got him to tighten the spokes and true the wheel, costing me $20. About three weeks later the same problem occured with the front wheel. This time I managed to break away from work and go back to NYCBikes and one of the mechanics took care of me right away and even threw on a free tube for the inconvenience. He was really sorry I'd had this problem and I was in an out in half an hour. Then this morning I set out to meet a friend in the city and notice the wobble again, this time one of the spokes on the rear wheel was very loose and the rest are mostly OK but starting to loosen and I know they are going to get worse as I ride. So I decide to stop by NYCBikes on my way into the city. It's 10:30 but they don't open until eleven but there was a guy there and he opened the door when I knocked. I politely explain that I had a mini-emergency and I needed to meet someone in the city and would he mind doing a quick tightening so at least it'd be safe to ride and I'd come back later for a full repair. He said he was sorry but he couldn't, that the store was closed and that he really needed the time for something else he had to do before the store opened. We went back and forth for a while and he peevishly tried to convince me that the wheel was OK, which was not true. I told him I couldn't believe that whatever it was he had to do was more important than making sure I got on the road safely and was shocked that he wouldn't take five minutes to check out my wheel. He apologized and said he felt like an *******. I was speechless and just said I'd be back later. So I return at around 5 o'clock figuring they'll do the wheel in a half hour like before. This time however I'm told by one of the mechanics, I'd have to leave the bike for a couple of days. I told the guy I didn't want to do that since this was the third time I've had to deal with this problem and I bought the wheels expecting to have to service the wheels once (their claim). So I start to ask the wrench if there's any way he can do it sooner when the owner interrupts and starts getting in my face about yelling at his mechanic and making unreasonable demands to have my job put in front of other customers and saying all types of other **** that I was not doing. In fact he got very close to my face with his hands and made me feel pretty uncomfortable and threatened. So I told the guy to calm down stop accusing me of things that weren't true like yelling and wasting 15 minutes of his time (I'd hardly been there for 5). I explained that I was merely hoping for the same half hour service I'd received last week. When his attitude really took a turn for the aggressive I told him that I chose to buy the wheels there instead of some other place because I wanted to support my local bike shop and why was he being such a dick to me. Not only did he not show any appreciation whatsoever, he said he didn't give a **** when I asked him how it was he knew I wasn't thinking about buying a big ticket item in his store. After all this it turned out that I'll probably have the bike back tomorrow morning. I left the store angry and upset. I was especially mad that a business owner who should know better than to disrespect his customers (especially when they have legitimate reasons to complain) and supportive of the community they service, namely the bicycle community, felt that it was OK to run a business with nothing but contempt for those same people. Frankly I feel like this guy needs to learn that it's a privilege that he gets to even have this business and if it were mine, I'd bend over backwards to try and win the loyalty of local customers, especially ones who openly declare that they'd rather patronize them than an anonymous web-order place.
