Rattle in bar-end shifters

My 9-speed DuraAce bar-end shifters have developed a bit of a rattle. There's a bit of play in the dark, plastic bit that sits between the shift-lever and the socket for the M5. (Same thing happened previously with my 8-speed bar-end shifters before the got upgraded.)

I'd shim it with a bit of coke-can aluminum, but it doesn't seem possible to disassemble the bar-end in a way that lets me put the shim between the plastic and the shifter body.

Suggestions beside grin-and-bear-it?
