putting some used long and thick shimano high end center pull pads on the front brake, and making sure a lot of brake surface contacted the rims, makes stopping 27" chrome at least comparable to my new v-brakes on 26" alloy. Still noticeably worse, but at least it conforms to generally intended design specs.
