I thank the good Lord for the Sram power link on my 8 speed chain... for my single speed Crosscheck, at least. There may be other issues for you fixed guys and gals, such as stopping sans brakes. But for simple mashing a big gear up a hill, I've never had any problems. And being able to pop the chain apart without tools when your cleaning is mighty nice.
