Maybe you're trying too hard.

I think that it's kind of like toilet training. For the first two years, keep your bathroom door closed and never let the tots in for any reason. On their second birthday allow them one peek into the bathroom and say: "This is the toilet, it's mommy's and daddy's, you leave it alone!"
