If you have a front brake and spin off the cog, you just pedal forward and use the brake.

Riding fixed doesn't imply that you skid all over the place like a silly 12 year-old. Speed modulation, trackstands and backwards circles work just fine w/o a lockring. Of course, if you have a track hub with good threads, it makes no sense not to use the lockring... unless you race track and can't be bothered.
