Front mech & XT hollowtech II help needed ?

So I installed another 06 hollowtech II onto my hardtail as I am really impressed with the other one I have. I have the wider BB shell on this frame (73mm I recall). I am not certain from the instructions if I needed the 1 spacer on the right (chainring side) for that BB, I put the spacer on and it seemed to fit OK.

The problem however, is the front Mech does not move as far over the big ring as it normally does - it doesn't move enough to allow the chain to be on the big ring. It is definitely not cable tension (in case anyone suggests) I have pulled the FD with no cable to see how far it goes and I have taken the L screw completely out to also check this.

The only thing I can think of is that I do not need the spacer on the BB ?? can anyone advise me on this ?
If I removed the width of the spacer it would in fact allow the FD to move out about the normal distance over the big ring.

I would just take the spacer out, but if it is supposed to be there I do not want to damage the BB and I am not sure if this could happen if the BB is not correctly spaced ???

Any ideas ?
