Fair enough. I just voted in it. Make no mistake, almost any fabric is going to give more protection than bare skin.
I'm going to do a comparison here, though the jury's still out on the sun protection merits of either. I got the Royal Robbins Expedition (short sleeve), and an Ex-Officio long sleeve, both rated UPF 30. Robbins uses Coolmax as a cooling fabric, Ex-Officio uses a different brand of essentially the same. The Robbins feels cooler, though that is a personal observation. Both are better than cotton seersucker. Both use velcro for pocket closures (which I hate). The Ex-Officio has a three way collar, and uses velcro as part of the design. I have yet to find a good collar position. Ex-Officio also has a velcro (again) closure on the rear vent, which I regard as unnecessary. It also has a hook in the yoke, probably to hold up the rear vent with velcro. Both have two breast pockets (good), but both are a little droopy due to the large size and the nature of the respective fabrics. Pockets on both are too big, but Robbins is a little closer to being right. Neither is a cycling shirt, by the way.
In my personal opinion, the Robbins at $60.00 in long sleeve looks better, and the simpler design works better so far as actually wearing the shirt goes. The Ex-Officio at $74.00 is just way overdesigned. Perceptually, the Robbins is slightly cooler, though this is unscientific comparison. If you insist on the Ex-Officio, prices at REI were recently in the mid $50s.
