Sure, you can say you were dispensing tough love and trying to raise standards of morality, but look at it from their point of view: some kids were having harmless fun and a self-important bully, who likes to blast his airhorn and expects the peasants to scatter, came cruising along, and when he saw they were lighting a firework he actually sped up and raced to the spot to kick it over before it went off, like some sadistic older brother. Not only was it mean, and wasteful, it was dangerous too.
