As long as you're using the little stubbie kind and keep the bolts tight... I'm thinking you will be fine.

There is increased force from putting the barends backward, closer to the center of the body weight, but I'm not sure if it would make much differance. As long as the bolts are kept tight, I'm guessing it's safe.
Skip your bike maintance and those bolts will loosen and you're going to eat it--- but that's just the way bar ends are, no matter what side of the bar they are on.
