I went to Italy about six years ago. Believe it or not, I really started to pick it up by the end of the week. The Italians are VERY nice and accomodating to us dumb Americans. As long as you try to speak it, they will help you out. Immersion methods are best. See if you can find an immersion course. Force yourself to speak it at home as well.
