Light Systems for nighttime Singletrack

Seems like lately I haven't had enough time to ride as much as I'd like, so I thought it'd be nice to get some rides in after my 1-yr-old son goes to bed. I'd like to hit the local singletrack, but first thing's first---I need a lighting system.

Bottom line is, I don't want to spend $500+, because I'm not out there doing 24-hour races or anything like that. I just need a one or two hours runtime, and lights bright enough for tight singletrack through the woods. I'd also like both a helmet light and a bar light. And I'd rather not spend any more than $300 at the most.

Problem is, I don't know the differences between the different bulb and battery types.

I know there's lots of info using the search function, and yes I am looking at it. But I'd also like to hear some first-hand experiences from those of you who ride trails at night (not interested in hearing about what people are commuting/road riding with).

Enlighten me.
