I think for the most part any $30 (arbitrary price) Snell/ANSI certified helmet will help keep your head safe. Beyond that, you're paying for style and comfort (and sometimes name brand). Higher priced helmets have nicer adjustment features, better vents (not necessarily more or less), are more aerodynamic and come in cooler colours (and/or patterns) and shapes.
