Wouldn't it have made a bit more sense if they had made a small adjuster spring and screw on the inner end of the rod? Would have made it easier for sprockets that sit a few MM farther out then the norm (running a 51t on the inside).

Probably, but then again, remember how old the design is. Something like 1951 or so, if my memory is correct? Back then you didn't have all the variations that arrived in the following 20 years or so. I've always been pleasantly surprised just how good this design was. It's got something like five moving parts (not counting adjustment screws), and will still handle a double chainwheel with aplomb. Everyone likes to crow about how wonderful the Record/NR/SR are . . . myself, I really appreciate the Gran Sport, as that's where Campagnolo really started.
