Alan, I have both straight and v-stays on bluemels mudguards, and both seem to work fine. The straight stays come in alloy, which I haven't seen in the v-stays (galvanized steel). The straight ones also give you a bit more adjustability, which can come in handy if you're installing with tight clearance.
