It just occurs to me that bubble wrap would be A Good Thing to help carry it in regular panniers as well, perhaps adhered with rubber bands. Maybe some extra rags around that, and the whole thing enclosed in a plastic bag or two in case of rain.

To paraphrase, you can have cheap or you can have style - you can't have both!
