I agree that overthinking everything is unproductive. However, passing is something that happens often enough in cycling that it's worth knowing if people have strong feelings about how it is done.
At any business meeting or social engagement, nuance is what distinguishes the guy that everyone wants to be with from the guy no one can stand. The road might not be exactly the same, but the basic dynamic is still there.
Another reason I asked the question is that I ride on the same roads at the same time year 'round. That means that most people who see me know who I am and where to find me. I like to get along with people I'm likely to encounter again.
