major tent features:
floor space
usable headroom
freestanding or requires stakes
double or single wall
vestibule size
number of doors
ventilation
ease of pitching
number of poles
length of poles (packing)
packed size
weight
performance in wind, heavy rain, hot conditions, blowing sand
color (stealth camping, quality of light)

these features often trade off with one another and your choice will depend on your touring style, location of tour, budget, number in party, etc.

I recently switched tents and experienced the trade offs first hand. If someone knows the perfect tent, post up.
