To take some of the fuzziness out of your measurements out of the equation, roll it out about 8-10 full revolutions and then take a measurement. Take that number and divide by the full number of revs. I shouldn't be off by more than a few mm's that way.

A few MMs become 1/10ths of a mile eventually. I figure a 20mi ride is enough to gague distance accurately.

To me it's important, since I do want to know exactly how many miles each load beraing component has on it. I keep track of this, so that in event of a component failure, that I can figure out exactly how many miles it has seen before failure.

I also use this data for excercise/trianing purposes, frequency of maintenance purposes, etc.
