DC Commuters - 4 Mile Run Question
Hi, all - I commute a few times a week from Fort Hunt Park to Ballston and have 2 options: Mt. Vernon Trail to Custis to Ballston or Mt. Vernon Trail to 4 Mile Run to WO&D to Ballston. They are both almost exactly the same mileage but the second is flatter and some days I like to switch it up. But a few weeks ago, I had a rare but unsettling encounter on 4 Mile Run right at it's start off the Mt. Vernon Trail near the airport. As I made the turn to catch 4 Mile Run (around 7:30 AM), there was a young guy on an old bike waiting under a tree off the trail. I just had a thought that if he got on the trail after I went by, I would stop and let him go. Well, he did come along right behind me, so I stopped (before getting underneath the overpasses) and started to pull out my cellphone. He slowed and almost stopped and then cruised by me very slowly and then waited under the first underpass. I waited a few minutes to see if another cyclist would happen by so I could just jump on his/her tail but that direction doesn't seem heavily used in the AM. It's the underpasses that are at issue b/c even though it's a short distance through them, it's hard to see who's there. And as fall comes on I thought I'd ask if anyone else has had any problems in that area. I'm a female runner and cyclist and it's very seldom that I get a bad feeling about something but that area has me a little concerned. If anyone has any experience or thoughts about that area, I'd really appreciate hearing them!
