chain size question (for drive train, not locking up)

i think i gotta go buy a 1/8" chain. i have a set of paul cranks to go on the circle a, and i thought they were 3/32" but a 3/32" chain doesn't fit on em. the chainring is a bit thicker than most, and the narrow links are too thin to slide over the teeth. don't have a 1/8" to test it on. is there a chance the chainring is 3/32" but the chain is just too narrow? it's a KMC SuperShuttle "bushingless narrow chain." are some 3/32" chains narrower than others? i see that some have different external widths, but does that effect the internal width?
