Schwinn Collegiate sorta restoration, "Eisenrad" or "Roue de fer"?
Both mean "Iron wheel" I believe.
I acquired a Schwinn Collegiate back in June. Unsure what to do with it at first; the more I rode it the more I understood that this is actually a pretty good bike. I wouldn't have touched one when I was a teenager, but that says more about teenagers than it does about bikes I guess. It deserved a better fate than to be ridden "as found" until indeterminacy gave way to neglect.
I started pulling parts off... a little moisture here and there, but no corrosion. Little if any pitting on the races. Cool.
The frame is bare, the S-6 wheels are short-timers. A rear 590 - with STEEL rim - is being built by the LBS (on a Nexus 4 w/ coaster brake), a front 590 has maybe arrived from a donor Free Spirit 3 speed (Which is also contributing fenders to the cause).
The fun part begins, sanding, priming, painting, repacking... I'm thinking of a blue so close to black you can only tell in direct sunlight. I'm not going to spring for decals, but I am thinking of having Iron Wheel in either German or French written on the top tube.
This bike will go into revenue service (commuting) in a couple of weeks.
I'm looking forward to it.
