Are cleat washers a must?

Hey all, if you've seen my other post regarding my first day clip-less you'll see I've had an interesting first outing. Anyway, I have Crank Bros Smarty Pedals and Shimano SH-MT20 shoes. If I use the cleat washers I can't clip in & stay in at all. Without the washers & using the shim I get a perfect fit. The manual that came with the pedals suggest trimming tread away from the shoes if you have clearance problems.

I'd rather not take a dremmel to my new shoes. Will I run into any problems not using the cleat washers, as in the cleats becoming loose often etc etc?
