Riding on the roadway (highways, bridges), esp. in NYC
Note: I'm posting this here instead of in the commuting section because I think if I found any highway riders, it'd be here.
Anyone ride on highways and/or bridge roadways? I just saw this and I'm totally inspired. Also, I think I could avoid flat tires if I commuted over the Bronx-Whitestone Bridge (on the roadway, because the bridge has no bike lane) instead of over the Triboro (which has a bike lane, but a narrow one full of SO much broken glass that riding through it is sometimes unavoidable). I ride an IRO Mark V, and I'm decently fast- but like, riding-assertively-in-Manhattan fast, not as-fast-as-a-car fast. I think the last time I calculated my average commuting speed it was about 15 mph (on a riding-hard-I'm-running-late day).
If anyone has ridden on the Bronx-Whitestone, I would love to here about it. I've never even seen the thing, except on a map; I just know it's really well situated for my commute. Someone told me it's an interstate. If anyone has general tips on riding on interstates and highways and such, please share. I've never done it before... (It should go without saying that I don't mean tips about legality, unless you actually have experience with being prosecuted yourself. In my experience (awesome youtube video aside), cops don't see what they aren't looking for, and no one expects a bicyclist on the highway.)
