My wife's bike has a silly bell on it. Some cities over here require bells. I think it sounds silly, but guess what- It seems to work. My wife resisted putting it on originally. But now, after a couple close calls, she uses it religiously.
I guess the only thing to worry about is to make sure that you give them enough warning so they don't wander in front of you or scatter aimlessly
