Newbie Cycle Shorts Question

Ok, I need some education about a subject that has me a little less than comfortable...cycle shorts.

I got my first pair of cycle shorts today and got to try them out on a 10 mile ride; which happens to be the longest ride this newbie has done. At first I was surprised at how bad the shorts seem to fit. The chamois does not hug my anatomy the way the rest of the shorts do. The result is that it feels like I have some "cargo space" in the back. There is an air pocket caused by the chamois sticking straight back instead of curving up with my....well, you get the picture. So question one, is this fit normal?

Also, I was thinking about the existance of the chamois, which is a pad or cushion of sorts. So question two, why do we get hard seats to avoid putting pressure on soft tissue only to add padding to our shorts?

And the final question is am I really not supposed to wear anything under the shorts?

So far I am finding this "cycle shorts" thing to be a little less than natural feeling.

Thanks for your responses,
-Dale
