Definitely practice your panning shots.. does your camera have a shutter-priority mode (you set the shutter speed, and it figures out the rest)? If so, pick a shutter speed like maybe 1/30 or 1/50 and then just practice panning while hitting the shutter release. If you do it right the rider will be nice and crisp, but the background will be blurred. Check out my autocross pics:
