My older 2005 7200FX has the steel fork you speak of. It rides as nice as the carbon fork does on the Trek 1000. I don't know why you would want to change it to carbon, unless your looking for some bling. The few grams of weight savings is of no consequence on a hybrid bike. However, that said, if money is no problem, upgrade to the Bontrager Carbon fork on the 7.5FX. Probably a $300 plus upgrade if done by your Trek dealer.
