Local Salvation Army stores and Goodwill stores often have mountain bikes from the 1986 to 1992 era with rigid forks. Some of these were "pro" quality bikes that weigh only 22 pounds to 26 pounds...lighter than some of the pro bikes of today. And, if you look long enough, you may find one in "almost new" condition for just $40 or $60. If a good bike shop finds one of these, they will tune it up and sell it with a shop satisfaction guarantee for around $200...a real bargain compared with the 2006 mountain bikes that sell in the $300 price range.
