That depends. A flat bar road bike would be faster but less durable. I've used a cyclocross bike and a fixed gear bike for commuting, now I'm using a Surly Karate Monkey 29er rigid mountain bike with massive 29x2.3 slicks. The Monkey is heavy but I like the way it rolls and it is TOUGH.
