I still have a 13 year old tub of a brand called DEEM, which is basically parafin with some heat shizzle mixed in. I used it religiously in Scotland and Belgium for early season racing (in wet & windy temps as low as 50°).
I'd apply a layer on my legs, then cover them in another layer of baby oil. Can't recall ever feeling the cold with all of that on my legs.
I'll never forget when i tried it back home in the US. Had just returned from Scotland, where it was in the low/mid 60s in June. I put the DEEM & baby oil on my legs for my first race back - in 90+° weather. Not only did my legs feel like they were burning the for the entire 3+ hour RR, I also got myself a nifty sunburn.
btw - as far as the smell. i could never firgure out what it smelled like until i found a can of root beer when i was over there. a friend asked if he could try it, and promptly spat it out and said 'it tastes like DEEM!'.

so there you go.
