skidding/skipping when you don't have to

a funny thing happened on my commute home last night. as i was coming down a hill, a group of girls walked out from in between parked cars. instead of hitting the brakes, i threw my weight forward, skidded and then shot around them. kind of struck me as odd, since i ride my commuter 5 days out of the week. now i'm sort of wondering why resist-skip/skid-go feels more natural than braking. i also wonder if i would clamp instinctively down on the brake as a last resort.

do any of you who switch between brakeless/braked, or who ride exclusively with brakes notice the same thing?
