From what my bike shop buddies tell me, stock bikes don't make the stores any money and can easily make them lose money instead (keeping completes in stock is expensive and space consuming). The real money (or so I'm told) comes from repairs and accessories. The bikes are more of a way of getting people in the door.
This is what a bike shop owner friend tells me. I was suprised at first, but if you think about it, it makes sense.
