Here's my thoughts, specifically directed at atbman and Bek but other can feel free to comment. I can see how bike boxes and bike lanes in certain areas can expedite moving through dense traffic for cyclists by clearing the way through intersections. For an experienced cyclist who knows how to read traffic and knows where the dangers lie in moving through traffic, this system can work out nicely. What I have a problem with is when these ideas are marketted at new cyclists (who don't have all the traffic skills necessary to utilize some of these accomodations safely) as a way to instruct them as to how navigate an intersection. The fact is that if you don't know to do it properly, no amount of roadway striping will indicate the proper way to do so. If the point is really to educate new cyclists, there are much more efficient and safer ways of doing so then bike lanes and bike boxes..............snip.....
Just as a new auto driver doesn't know how to use lane markings, neither does a new cyclist. They can read the instructions provided by the same agency that has installed the lane markings or bike boxes. I have been cycling in the street since 1980 and, although we have the type of bike lane/right turn lane shown by Bekologist, I have never seen the Vancouver style of bike boxes and when I saw the first photos of them I had no Idea how they should be used. That's why I started this thread. Reading the replies of folks from Vancouver and Victoria who have actually used these facilities and after reading the manual, I feel confidant that I could use them properly.

Here is the "Instruction Manual"published by the city of Vancouver, British Columbia.
