I am one of the people who talk **** on Philly CM.
I stopped going when I saw that it was nothing but a group of teenagers that wanted to ride around and piss people off. I have done CM in NYC a few times and it was actually fun. People rode together and there were enough people to justify taking up the lanes of traffic.
When I stopped going to the Philly Critical Mass it was about 12 kids taking up both lanes on Broad St. and trying to ride as slow as they possibly could until drivers started doing dangerous things just to get away from them.
not fun... maybe it has changed...who knows.
