If your tires show wear after a minute or two, you probably have the pressure improperly adjusted. I usually make sure my tire is fully inflated, then I adjust the pressure so that when I grab the rear wheel and jerk it up and down, it doesn't slip. No more and no less.

Backup tires are a good idea. GP4000s are too pricey to be shredded on a trainer.
